Private roads. Local solution.
Town Won’t
Plow It?
We Will.
Snow plowing for Hingham’s private lanes, shared drives, and small neighborhood roads.
The new town policy
What changed
in Hingham.
On September 29, 2026, the Hingham Select Board adopted a new policy for plowing private ways. To stay eligible for town plowing, your road needs to meet the town’s minimum standards.
DPW inspects private ways each year. Residents of roads that don’t qualify are mailed a letter by November 15.
Newer unaccepted subdivision roads get a maximum of three seasons of town plowing.
The town’s eligibility checklist
Two or more qualifying homes
Homes built before July 1, 1980 must front the road.
At least 12 ft wide
Enough road width for the town’s plow.
14 ft of overhead clearance
Overhanging branches must be out of the way.
Clear shoulders
No walls, fences, mailboxes, or shrubs in the way.
No potholes or ruts deeper than 2 inches
The road surface must meet minimum standards.
Room to turn around
Dead ends need space for a plow to turn safely.
